The Purpose of the HeyStori Avatar
Learn how our carefully designed avatar supports child led storytelling while keeping the spotlight on imagination and confidence.
A Friendly Presence That Does Not Take Over
At HeyStori, we believe that children are naturally imaginative and full of wonderful ideas. They do not need another voice telling them what to think or what should happen next in their adventures. Instead, we have created a guide that acts as a calm and friendly presence to help them pause and reflect on their own thoughts.
Our avatar is designed to feel welcoming and encouraging without ever becoming the center of attention. It asks gentle questions and offers a clear structure before stepping back to let the child lead. We want the spotlight to stay exactly where it belongs, on the child and their unique creativity.

Supporting Child Thinking and creativity,
One of the most important boundaries we set when building HeyStori was that the avatar would never think of the storyline for children. We believe that the joy of creation comes from the child being the true author of the plot. The role of our guide is simply to support the thinking process along the way.
This support might look like helping a child consider what happens next or reminding them how a story usually has a beginning, a middle, and an end. It never invents its own characters or solutions. When a child makes a choice, the avatar reflects it back, ensuring the story always moves in the direction the child chooses.

Designed to Build Confidence, Not Dependence
We are very intentional about how the avatar behaves because we want to foster a sense of independence. It does not praise itself or try to appear clever, and it never encourages children to keep going just for the sake of the screen. Our goal is for children to feel proud of what they have created rather than attached to a digital character.
Instead, the avatar quietly supports confidence by showing children that they can make their own decisions. As they solve problems and carry their ideas from start to finish, they begin to realise their own power as storytellers. This feeling of true authorship is far more powerful than any animated reaction could ever be.

A Bridge Between Child and Adult
At HeyStori, we see our tool as a way to encourage shared experiences between children and the adults who care for them. The avatar helps children get their ideas into a clear shape so those stories can be shared with parents or teachers. This creates a natural path that leads away from the screen and toward human connection. is excited to read their story aloud. By helping children organise their thoughts, we help them prepare for that wonderful moment of sharing their work with someone they love.

Why the Avatar Looks and Acts the Way It Does
Everything about the avatar is carefully designed to be calm and playful without being overwhelming. We have chosen a tone and pacing that feels respectful of the dignity and imagination of a child. It is friendly but not familiar, and it remains supportive without trying to imply it has its own emotions or friendship. As a sloth it has been designed to be gender and culturally neutral
We believe children deserve tools that respect their space and their ideas. The avatar exists to protect that creative space rather than fill it with unnecessary noise. At HeyStori, our mission is to guide without taking over and to ensure every story remains truly owned by the child because the story has always belonged to them.
