Purple People Eater

High atop a craggy, grey mountain in the heart of Scotland lived a very unusual fellow. He was a Purple People Eater, but he wasn't as scary as his name suggested. He was a towering mountain of violet fluff with eyes as big and round as dinner plates. While the wind whistled through the rocks, he sat alone in his damp, misty cave, feeling quite small despite being so very tall.

The Purple People Eater came from a long line of fierce creatures who loved to nibble on knees and munch on elbows. But this fellow was different. He had decided long ago that people were much too nice to eat! Unfortunately, the villagers in the valley didn't know that. They only saw his purple fur and giant size and ran away screaming, leaving him with no one to talk to but the silent stones.

One particularly misty morning, the Purple People Eater felt a giant sigh rumble in his tummy. 'I am so tired of being lonely,' he whispered. He looked at his big, fuzzy hands and realized they were perfect for building things, not breaking them. He reached for his trusty leather bag and checked his tools. He had a plan—a secret, kind, wonderful plan to show the village who he really was.

When the sun tucked itself behind the peaks and the moon painted the heather silver, the Purple People Eater crept down the mountain. He moved as softly as a cloud, his purple toes tapping gently on the cobblestones of Oakhaven. The village was fast asleep. Every window was dark, and every door was shut tight. It was the perfect time for a secret mission.

He found a garden gate that had lost its hinge and quietly tapped it back into place with his hammer. Click-clack! He found a wobbly park bench and tightened the screws until it was sturdy and strong. He even fixed a broken birdhouse in the town square. With every mend and every fix, his heart felt a little bit lighter. He was being helpful, even if no one could see him.

But the villagers were clever. They noticed the fixed fences and the mended benches. 'Who is this mystery helper?' they wondered. They decided to set a trap. A brave man stayed awake, hiding behind a large cider barrel with his eyes wide open. He waited and waited until he saw a giant, purple shadow stretching across the pavement. He gasped and ran to ring the village bell!

CLANG! CLANG! CLANG! The bell woke everyone up. Doors flew open and people rushed out into the street. They saw the Purple People Eater standing by the fountain, holding his saw. 'The monster is here!' they cried, waving their torches and broomsticks. The Purple People Eater felt his tummy do a somersault. He wasn't a monster, but he looked very big and very purple in the flickering light.

Instead of running away, the Purple People Eater took a deep breath. He stood as tall as he could and spoke in a voice like rolling thunder, but very, very soft. 'I only want to be your friend,' he said. 'I know my name is scary, and my family was a bit bitey, but I just want to help fix things.' He showed them his bag of tools, his hands trembling just a little bit.

The villagers went very quiet. Then, a small girl with bright red hair and a knitted jumper stepped forward. She walked right up to the giant creature. 'He's the one who fixed my doll's house,' she told the crowd. 'He's not a people eater, he's a people helper!' She reached out and patted his fuzzy purple leg. One by one, the villagers lowered their broomsticks and began to smile.

The Purple People Eater learned that taking the first step is the hardest part of making a friend. The villagers invited him to stay, and together, they built him a magnificent new house right in the village. It had a very high ceiling and a very sturdy door. He wasn't lonely anymore, because he knew that kindness and a little bit of courage could turn even the scariest name into a favourite friend.
