With one last look at the apartment that felt like a cage, she turned her back on the city and began her long walk toward the distant treeline.

The air changed as Maya stepped into the Great Forest. The smell of exhaust and old stone was replaced by the scent of damp earth and pine. Massive trees stood like silent guardians, their branches woven together like a ceiling of lace. For a moment, Maya felt like a queen entering her kingdom, but as the shadows lengthened, the silence of the woods began to feel very, very big.

By afternoon, the clouds turned heavy and a cold rain began to fall. Maya’s excitement faded into a dull ache in her chest. She sat at the base of a giant oak, hugging her knees to her chest. Suddenly, a twitch of ears caught her eye. A small, brown bunny hopped out from behind a fern, stopping just inches from her blue sneakers. It didn't seem afraid of the rain or the sad girl. Maya reached out a trembling hand, and the bunny nuzzled her finger. The ache in her chest eased. She wasn't alone; the animals she loved were right here with her.

Maya followed the bunny as the sun began to peek through the clouds. Suddenly, *snap!* Maya tripped over a stubborn twig and tumbled into a patch of soft moss. A peal of laughter rang out, but it wasn't hers. She looked up to see a girl named Angel. Maya was scared at first, but then she saw Angel's kind eyes. They both looked at the twig, then at each other, and burst into fits of giggles.

Angel took Maya to her cozy woodland home. Over a warm meal, Maya explained why she had run away. Angel listened, nodding, and told Maya she could stay. 'I can teach you to survive,' Angel promised. 'But you must remember one rule: never go out at midnight. That is when the Night Runner stalks the fog, and the forest becomes a place of shadows.'

A few nights later, curiosity gnawed at Maya. Why was midnight so special? She waited until Angel was asleep and crept out into the night. The forest was transformed. A thick, milky fog swirled around the trees, swallowing the light. Maya felt a chill that had nothing to do with the wind. Somewhere in the white mist, something was moving.

The Night Runner emerged from the fog, a terrifying shadow. Angel appeared, trying to pull Maya to safety, but the figure blocked their path. Maya was terrified, but then she remembered the city. She remembered watching the karate classes from her window and practicing the moves in her room. With a fierce cry, Maya stepped forward, using her karate techniques to strike and parry, driving the shadow back until it vanished into the mist forever.

The Night Runner never returned, and the spooky fog lifted from the forest. Maya was no longer the girl who ran away; she was the hero who stayed. Together with Angel and her animal friends, she built a life of adventure. She used her city skills and her forest heart to protect the wild, living happily ever after in the place she finally called home.
